The Underworld geodynamics group works on scientific problems, computational algorithms, and software for Earth and planetary dynamics. Everything we produce is released under open source licences, so that anyone can reproduce our results and build on them.

Our particular interest is the long-term evolution of the Earth, and helping other people run time-evolving models of plate- and lithosphere-scale problems.

The group is based in Australia — at the Australian National University, the University of Melbourne and Monash University — with collaborators across the (under)world.

Governance

Underworld is community research infrastructure, funded by AuScope as part of the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).

Development is led from the Research School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University and overseen by a steering committee drawn from the supporting organisations and from the user community. Day-to-day decisions — what gets built, what gets fixed, what gets released — happen in the open, on the issue tracker and in pull requests, and that record is the authoritative one.

Additional support has come from the Australian Research Council, the NeCTAR eResearch Tools programme, and the National Computational Infrastructure. Underworld 2 was originally developed with the Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing.

Public routes come first on purpose. A question asked in the issue tracker is answered where the next person with the same question will find it; a question asked by email is answered once.

The wider ecosystem

We also develop other packages, which have homes of their own: stripy for triangulation in the plane and on the sphere, and quagmire for surface processes.

Models built with Underworld and shared by the people who built them are collected at the model exchange.
